AFM 3 on-device speech comprehension
🎙️ Cloud-grade speech comprehension is now running entirely on-device.
💬 The Problem: Local dictation acts like a literal typist, printing every filler word and false start. Semantic cleanup used to require shipping raw audio to the cloud.
🎧 The Fix: Apple’s AFM 3 Core Advanced adds an “active listener” multimodal layer. It pairs acoustic mapping with language comprehension to track sentence structure, filter disfluencies, and punctuate text locally.
🧩 The Architecture: AFM 3 uses sparse activation. It draws just ~1 billion active parameters per request from a 20-billion-parameter flash-resident model rather than running the full network.
🔒 The Result: A 44.7% win rate over prior systems. You get clean, punctuated meeting notes with zero audio leaving Apple Silicon.
📝 I just published an architectural deep dive explaining this multimodal stack, and how I use Apple’s Foundation Models to power offline voice apps (CoreRecord on Mac).
